Automatic Transmission

Garage PhotoAn automatic transmission frees the driver from having to shift gears manually, it automatically adjusts gear ratios as the vehicle moves providing the best range of speed and torque outputs necessary for vehicular travel. Usually automatic transmissions provide 3 to 5 forward gear ratios, pluse reverse, park, and neutral.

Manual Transmission

A manual transmission, also known as a stick shift or standard transmission is a type of transmission whereby the driver must shift gears as the need arises. Manual transmission systems will provide 3 to 6 forward gear ratios plus reverse and neutral.

Clutches

A clutch is a mechanical device that engages and disengages the power transmission. They are used whenever the transmission of power or motion must be controlled, in other words whether or not engine power is to be transmitted to the wheels. Consequently, they exist in both automatic and manual transmission vehicles. In a manual transmission, the driver engages or disengages the clutch by a foot pedal. In an automatic transmission, as you might guess, this occurs automatically. In both situations the clutch is always in use and can eventually wear out.

All Wheel Drive Transmission

TestimonialAn All Wheel Drive ("AWD") vehicle is one with a powertrain capable of providing power to all its wheels. For automobiles, which of course have 4 wheels, it may also be referred to as four wheel drive or 4WD or 4×4. All Wheel Drive may be either part-time all-wheel drive or full-time. Part-Time, also known as "On Demand", is the situation where one axle is permanently connected to the drive while the other is connected only as needed. On the other hand Full-time, also known as "Permanent," is the situation where both axles are permanently connected.

Front-Wheel Drive Transmission

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is a the type of transmission whereby the engine drives the front wheels only. The opposite, of course, is rear-wheel drive where power is directed to the rear wheels only.
